Quiet beaches away from the crowds
Where to go when Patong and Kata are full
These beaches stay quiet for a reason: they are further north, harder to reach, or you have to walk. That is the trade.
Take water and cash. Most of these have one shack or nothing at all, and none of them have a cash machine.
Quiet also means nobody is watching
These beaches are quiet because they are remote, and remote means there is unlikely to be anyone watching the water. Thailand posts lifeguards at designated beaches only, and a bay at the end of a jungle path is not one of them. Assume no patrol, no flag and no rescue.
That changes the maths. On a patrolled beach a bad decision gets you a whistle; here it gets you a long swim with nobody on the sand who can help. The UK Foreign Office records drownings in strong riptides on this coast, and a riptide does not look dangerous from the shore.
The practical version: stay closer in than you would at home, do not go in alone, and if the water is moving in a way you do not understand, stay out. Several of these bays are rock rather than sand, so reef shoes turn a painful entry into an easy one.

01Banana Beach
Down a jungle path off the main road. The walk is why it stays empty.
Down a signed jungle path off the main north-coast road, with a short steep walk to the sand. That walk is the entire reason it stays empty. There is usually one beach shack; bring water and cash, and do not count on either.

02Layan Beach
The quiet northern tip of Bang Tao, with a lagoon and far fewer people.
The far northern tip of Bang Tao, past where the beach clubs stop. A lagoon empties out behind it and the water is usually calm in high season. A few beach restaurants and very little else, which is the appeal.

03Nai Thon Beach
Clean, calm and barely developed. Enough shops to eat, not enough to spoil it.
One of the least developed beaches on the west coast that still has somewhere to eat. Clean sand, clear water, a couple of restaurants and very little construction. Worth the drive north if you want space.

04Ao Sane Beach
More rock than sand, and the best shore snorkelling on the south coast.
More rock than sand, past Nai Harn towards the Ao Sane headland. The reason to come is the snorkelling straight off the shore, which is the best on the south coast. Reef shoes make it far more pleasant.

05Ya Nui Beach
A tiny cove below the windmill. Snorkel gear is worth carrying down.
A small cove tucked below the windmill viewpoint, between Nai Harn and Promthep. Rocky headlands at both ends make it one of the better spots on the island for snorkelling straight off the beach. Kayaks are usually available.

06Mai Khao Beach
Phuket's longest beach, right by the airport. Empty sand for kilometres.
Phuket's longest beach, eleven kilometres running north from the airport, backed by national park rather than development. Almost empty most of the year. Currents are strong in low season and lifeguard cover is thin — treat it as a walking beach, not a swimming one.

07Laem Singh Beach
A rocky cove between Surin and Kamala. Access has changed — check before you go.
A small rocky cove between Surin and Kamala with very clear water. Access has changed more than once in recent years as the land above it changed hands, so check locally before you commit to the drive.

Kata Noi Beach
Kata's smaller sister. One road in, so the crowd never really builds.
Reached by one road over the headland from Kata, which is exactly why it stays calmer. Clear water, a short arc of sand, and a handful of resorts rather than a strip. Good for a half day if you want quiet without driving far.
