The Big Buddha and Wat Chalong
The Big Buddha is a 45-metre marble Buddha on the Nakkerd ridge, with views over southern Phuket. The road up is steep and narrow, so take a taxi rather than a scooter. Go in the morning before the heat. Cover shoulders and knees; sarongs are lent at the top. It is free, and donations are invited.
Wat Chalong, down the hill, is the island’s biggest and most visited temple. It is a working temple: cover shoulders and knees, and take your shoes off before going inside. Early morning is cooler and quieter.
Eat by the bay
Kan Eang @ Pier has served seafood on Chalong Bay since the 1970s. It is not an all-halal kitchen, but there is a halal section on the menu; ask the staff which dishes qualify.
